July 31, 2014: Favourable weather conditions will lead to increased black pepper production in the next season. The 2014-15 season which starts from October will witness better production than the current season.
This forecast is quite encouraging as the pepper production has fallen quite drastically in recent times. The current season’s estimated production stood at 35,000 tonnes as against 55,000 to 65,000 tonnes a few years ago.
Kerala's Pathanamthitta, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts are expected to witness a fall in output as per latest projections. These areas had, however, produced better output last season. Outlook for Kottayam and other districts appear to be promising.
