Pepper Spray is the ultimate self defence mechanism known to the history of womankind. The first image that comes to our mind is that of a woman spraying it in the eyes of the goons and them running for shelter.
But what does this spray contain? Many think it's Black Pepper because after all black pepper can do that to our eyes. But sadly, one of the biggest lie is that the ‘pepper’ used in it is black pepper.
Hola! Meet Pepper Spray that uses capsicum and not black pepper as the defence mechanism. So, the active ingredient in pepper spray is capsaicin, which is nothing but a chemical derived from the fruit of plants in the Capsicum genus, including chillies. So, oleoresin capsicum or OC is the chemical responsible for making chili peppers hot.
So pepper sprays are a combination of capsaicin, water, propylene glycol, and nitrogen or some other propellant. If we talk about the effects of pepper spray they actually last for anything between 30 to 45 minutes. However, some effects of pepper spray can fade within 15 minutes while others can affect the individual for the rest of the day. And black pepper has no role to play in it.
However, did you know eating black pepper powder (kali mirch) in any form improves eyesight? It is especially beneficial when taken with clarified butter (ghee). So, unlike pepper spray that can make you defence less and your eyes burn. Black pepper can give you a lease of life, they are healthy and definitely god-send.
