Spices Board inaugurates second e-auction centre for cardamom

May 31, 2016: Spices Board set up its second centre for e-auctions of cardamom in Bodinayakanur in the Thenu district of Tamil Nadu, which is also known as the cardamom city.

The centre has been constructed within the premises of the Board over two acres of area and has all modern facilities to enable cardamom trading. Spices Board had set up the first centre in 2011 at Puttady Spice Park in Kerala.

Small cardamom production reportedly reached 22,000 tonnes in 2015-16. Exports of the spice were valued at Rs 45 million during the year. Both exports and production have witnessed improvement with the assistance of the Board in both development and marketing. Additional initiatives taken by the board include implementation of good agricultural practices (GAP), use of bio-inputs, better grading and optimal usage of pesticides. A cleaning and grading centre is slated to come up shortly at the e-auction centre.
