Makaibari plans Dubai entry

July 22, 2015: The iconic Makaibari tea from Darjeeling is planning an entry into the Dubai market. For the purpose, it has initiated talks with Bateel, which is an upmarket luxury food chain in Dubai.

The Dubai market has traditionally been more inclined towards coffee, but the demand for tea has been growing, led in particular by the immigration of Arab expatriates from nations like Syria, Lebanon and Egypt.

Makaibari tea has enjoyed a strong reputation among tea connoisseurs wordwide. Last year, it booked a record price of US$ 1850 (Rs 1.11 lakh) per kg from tea importers in US, UK and Japan. It has relaunched its packet tea under the brand name Apoorva and also launched a portal for direct sourcing of its tea. The factory is the oldest tea manufacturing facility in Darjeeling, and was set up in 1859.
